Student-Developed Work

90 Second Newbery Project

At EPL, I started a weekly homeschool program for a group of 5-20 students ages 10-14.  Each week was a new topic, including STEM projects, book discussions, creative writing projects and small film projects. It was discovered early on that filmmaking was a passion the group wanted to learn more about together and we took on the challenge of the 90 Second Newbery. We created two 90 Second Newbery projects during my time in Evanston.

Curriculum Breakdown:

  • Read the book

  • Write/Storyboard the script

  • Plan/design the set

  • Shoot the film

  • Edit

All aspects of the filmmaking process were completed by the students with the exception of editing.

stop-motion animation workshop

This course was focused on creating a 30-second animated film from an original idea. Teens wrote a script, built the set and shot the film using materials at hand. The goal for this workshop was for teens to gain a basic understanding of the filmmaking process as well as learn about poetry, teamwork and presentation skills. This was a collaboration between EPL and Northwestern University.
